Independent Living Service (I.L.S.)

 Overview

I.L.S. is a program offered through Regional Centers for individuals seeking to live independently within their community. The Regional Center collaborates with various professionals and organizations to provide essential skills training for autonomous living.

After completing the initial training, ongoing I.L.S. support is available at a reduced level to help maintain acquired skills.

Training Approach:

I.L.S. instruction is primarily conducted one-on-one. This means sessions typically involve just the client and their assigned instructor, except for community-based activities or pre-arranged group sessions. Your Service Coordinator can clarify the differences between individual and group training options.

Important Distinctions:

I.L.S. is not:

• A transportation service

• An emergency response system

• A companionship program

• A caregiving service

Financial Education and Support:

- Guiding individuals on effective money handling, including:

  • Proper check cashing procedures

  • Maintaining accurate checkbook records

  • Creating and following budgets

  • Timely bill payments

  • Developing savings strategies

Mobility and Transportation Assistance:

- Helping clients become familiar with:

  • Public transit systems

  • Alternative transportation options

Personal Well-being:

- Promoting proper health practices and hygiene routines

- Empowering individuals to advocate for themselves

Healthcare and Community Resource Utilization:

- Facilitating access to medical and dental care

- Introducing various community support services

Safety and Emergency Preparedness:

- Educating on community safety resources (police, fire department, emergency services)

- Teaching home safety measures

- Promoting community safety awareness

Leisure and Social Integration:

- Encouraging self-directed recreational activities

- Supporting participation in mainstream community settings
